The Person Behind MasterLab
About MasterLab
Built by a producer and working DJ who got tired of theory-heavy guides that forgot to mention what actually matters inside Ableton.
Who I am
I go by Teaspoon Ulysses. I’m a DJ and music producer who has been working with Ableton Live for years — using it not just to make music, but as the backbone of my live DJ sets, my recording sessions, and everything in between.
I started DJing at local events and worked my way into weddings and private events, which meant I had to get serious about how my mixes actually sounded — not just on my studio monitors, but on venue sound systems, Bluetooth speakers, and whatever else a client happened to be running that night. That pressure taught me more about mastering and mix translation than any guide I ever read online.
On the production side, I use Ableton Live for everything: writing, arranging, mixing, and mastering. Over time I developed a workflow that actually fits how I think — not the textbook version of how you’re supposed to work, but the one that gets tracks finished and sounding the way I want them to sound.
Why I built MasterLab
When I was learning to produce and master, most of the guides I found fell into one of two categories: overly academic theory that never touched a DAW, or generic “here are some tips” articles that didn’t go deep enough to actually be useful.
What I actually needed was a practical, no-fluff reference built specifically around Ableton — one that told me which device to use, what parameters to start with, and why those choices matter. Not a course. Not a YouTube series. Just a clean, well-organized guide I could check whenever I needed to.
That’s what MasterLab is. Every page on this site reflects something I’ve actually worked through in Ableton — the signal chains, the parameter values, the common mistakes, all of it comes from real sessions, not theory.
What’s on this site
MasterLab is a free resource for independent music producers. Everything here is built around Ableton Live’s native tools — no third-party plugin requirements, no paid courses, no upsells.
- Mastering Guide — a full step-by-step mastering workflow with exact parameters for every native device
- Mixing Checklist — everything to verify before you call a mix finished and move to mastering
- Workflow & Shortcuts — the keyboard shortcuts and session habits that actually save time
- Music Theory Basics — a producer-focused theory reference with direct Ableton application
- Genre Production Tips — arrangement, sound design, and mix conventions by genre
A note on how this site is written
I write these guides the way I’d explain things to another producer — direct, specific, and focused on what you actually need to do inside Ableton rather than what sounds impressive in a textbook.
If something on this site isn’t clear, is missing something important, or you think I’ve got something wrong, I genuinely want to hear about it. Use the Feedback page — it’s there for exactly that reason.
