Signal Chain — Master Bus Order

* Optional — a second EQ pass after limiting trims harshness; Saturator adds harmonic warmth before the ceiling.

The Mastering Workflow

Each step includes device settings, parameters, and the reasoning behind them.

1. Session Setup

  • Create a brand-new Ableton project dedicated to mastering — never master inside your mix session
  • Drag your exported stereo mix (WAV or AIFF) onto a new audio track in Arrangement View
  • Go to Live → Preferences → Audio and confirm sample rate matches your file (typically 44.1 kHz)
  • Right-click the clip and disable Warp — warping introduces phase artifacts on a finished mix
  • Import one or two commercially mastered reference tracks onto a separate, muted audio track

2. Gain Staging & Headroom

UTILITY

  • Your mix should peak around -6 dBFS before any processing — this is your headroom buffer
  • Place Utility at the very front of the master chain to trim input gain if the mix is too hot
  • Aim for the master output meter sitting around -12 to -10 LUFS before any limiting is applied
  • A clean gain structure lets every downstream plugin behave predictably with no surprise clipping

3. EQ Correction

EQ EIGHT

  • First pass: use the Spectrum device to visually identify problem frequencies before touching anything
  • Apply a High Pass filter below 20-30 Hz — sub-rumble is inaudible but consumes headroom
  • Use a narrow boost (Q 3-5) to hunt resonances, then flip to a cut once identified
  • A broad low shelf at 60-100 Hz adds weight if the mix sounds thin — keep it gentle
  • A gentle high shelf at 10-16 kHz adds air and presence — stay under +1.5 dB
  • Toggle EQ Eight into Mid/Side mode (bottom-left selector) to treat center and sides independently
  • Mid channel: reduce muddy low-mids at 200-400 Hz if the center sounds boxed-in
  • Side channel: boost the high shelf slightly for spaciousness without touching the mono center

4. Glue Compression

GLUE COMPRESSOR

  • Place Glue Compressor after the first EQ to bind the mix elements together cohesively
  • This emulates an SSL G-Bus compressor — adds gel without audibly squashing dynamics
  • Start with a slow attack to preserve transients, then tighten if the mix feels too punchy
  • Release set to Auto lets the compressor respond intelligently to the track’s natural rhythm
  • Target just 1-2 dB of gain reduction — going further starts to pump noticeably
  • Use the Dry/Wet knob for parallel-style compression without a separate return track

5. Multiband Dynamics

MULTIBAND DYNAMICS

  • Use after Glue Compressor to manage dynamics within specific frequency zones independently
  • Especially useful when the bass is overpowering relative to the mids, or hi-mids feel harsh
  • Each band has its own threshold, ratio, attack, and release — treat each zone on its own merits
  • Suggested crossover points: Low band below 200 Hz, Mid 200-5k Hz, High 5k Hz+
  • Use gentle compression ratios — heavy multiband processing sounds artificial quickly
  • Enable Soft Knee on each active band to smooth the onset of compression

6. Stereo Imaging

UTILITY TIP

  • Place a second Utility after dynamics to shape the stereo field at the master level
  • Width above 100% widens the stereo image — use sparingly, 105-115% is usually enough
  • Width below 100% narrows the field — helpful if the mix sounds smeared or unfocused
  • Always enable Mono and verify that bass elements remain strong — sub-bass must be mono
  • Use Bass Mono mode: enable it and set the crossover around 120 Hz to anchor the low end
  • Check mono compatibility by collapsing to mono — anything that disappears has a phase problem

7. Saturation & Warmth

SATURATOR

  • Saturator adds harmonic richness and perceived loudness without brute-force compression
  • Use Soft Clip or Tape mode for the most transparent, musical character
  • Keep Drive very low — this effect is meant to be felt, not overtly heard
  • Saturation can warm up digital mixes that feel cold by introducing subtle even harmonics
  • Experiment with placement: before compression for more character, after for more control
  • Use Dry/Wet to blend it in rather than running it 100% wet

8. Limiting for Loudness

LIMITER

  • The Limiter is the final processor — it controls peaks and delivers competitive loudness
  • Set the ceiling to -0.3 dBFS — never 0 dB, as intersample peaks can clip downstream
  • Lower the threshold gradually and watch the gain reduction meter settle at 3-6 dB on peaks
  • Beyond 6 dB of limiting begins crushing transients and flattening the life out of the track
  • Streaming targets: Spotify -14 LUFS, Apple Music -16 LUFS, DJ and club use -8 to -10 LUFS
  • Toggle bypass repeatedly to compare — the master should feel better, not just louder

9. Reference Track Comparison

TIP

  • Unmute your reference track and use Utility to level-match it precisely to your master
  • Compare in short 20-30 second bursts — switching quickly reveals differences your brain adapts to
  • Listen for: low-end balance, high-end brightness, stereo width, overall energy and loudness impression
  • If your master sounds dull, muddy, or weak, identify which step in the chain needs revisiting
  • Take a 15-20 minute break before your final comparison — fresh ears hear the truth

10. Export Settings

  • Open File → Export Audio/Video (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R)
  • Set Rendered Track to Master
  • File Type: WAV — lossless and universally accepted for mastered delivery
  • Sample Rate: 44100 Hz for music distribution, 48000 Hz if delivering for video
  • Bit Depth: 24-bit for your master archive, 16-bit plus dithering if exporting for CD
  • Enable Dithering (Triangular or POW-r2) when converting to 16-bit — never skip this step
  • Disable Normalize — this overrides your limiter ceiling and undoes your loudness work
  • Export a second copy at 16-bit/44.1 kHz for quick upload testing before submitting your final

Pro Tips for Better Masters

Take breaks. Ear fatigue is real. Step away for 15-30 minutes before making critical decisions.
A/B relentlessly. Toggle bypass on your entire chain frequently. If bypass sounds equally good, your processing is not helping.
Check in mono. Use Utility’s Mono button. Anything important that disappears has a phase problem.
Test everywhere. After export, listen on earbuds, a laptop speaker, and in your car.
Trust meters. Use Ableton’s Spectrum and an LUFS meter. Ears lie when fatigued.
Less is more. Good mastering is invisible. If you can hear what your chain is doing, it’s probably doing too much.

Targets by Genre

EDM / ElectronicTight mono low end, bright highs, heavier compression. Target -8 to -10 LUFS for clubs.
Hip-HopWarm low-mids, clear vocals, assertive limiting. 808s mono below 100 Hz. Target -12 to -9 LUFS.
